Trading-Journal Sample Segmentation in Crypto: When the Common Rule Produces a Misleading Result
'Find your best segment and trade only that' is how overfitting enters a journal. With enough slices, some segment always looks great.
Short answer
If you slice 100 trades by session, weekday, setup, coin and side, some combination will show excellent results by chance. Choosing it and trading only that segment usually disappoints. Limit the number of segments, decide them before looking, require a minimum count, and confirm any 'best segment' on new trades before restricting your trading to it.
Worked example
| Step | Value |
|---|---|
| Trades | 100 |
| Segments tested | 5 dimensions → dozens of cells |
| Best cell | e.g. 9 trades, 89% wins |
| Out of sample | Usually regresses |
| Fix | Few, pre-chosen segments |

Arithmetic uses standard sizing formulas. Fee rates (0.05% taker, 0.02% maker), slippage and funding values are illustrative; check your venue's schedule. Liquidation figures are simplified approximations; exchanges calculate them with their own maintenance-margin rules (see Bybit's documentation).
