Trading Fee Budget in Crypto: When the Common Rule Produces a Misleading Result
A 0.05% fee sounds negligible. Multiplied by trade frequency and notional relative to equity, it can exceed any realistic edge.
Short answer
The common rule 'fees are small' misleads when trading is frequent or leveraged. Annual fee cost as a share of equity ≈ trades per day × round-trip fee × notional ÷ equity × 365. Two trades a day at 2× equity notional with 0.1% round trip costs ≈ 0.4% of equity per day — about 146% per year before slippage. Set a fee budget: the maximum share of equity you'll pay per month, and size frequency and notional to fit it.
Worked example
| Step | Value |
|---|---|
| Trades per day | 2 |
| Notional ÷ equity | 2× |
| Round-trip fee | 0.10% |
| Per day | ≈ 0.4% of equity |
| Per year | ≈ 146% of equity |

Arithmetic uses standard sizing formulas. Fee rates (0.05% taker, 0.02% maker), slippage and funding values are illustrative; check your venue's schedule. Liquidation figures are simplified approximations; exchanges calculate them with their own maintenance-margin rules (see Bybit's documentation).
