Trading Fee Budget: A Worked Crypto Example With Fees Included
Trading fees are small per trade and large per month. A fee budget makes the cost of your trading frequency visible.
Short answer
Monthly fee budget = trades per month × average notional × round-trip fee rate. Example: 120 trades a month at $8,000 average notional with 0.05% taker fees on both sides costs 120 × $8,000 × 0.10% = $960. Using maker orders for entries (0.02%) cuts it to about $672. Compare that with your expected gross profit; if fees take a large share, reduce frequency, size or switch order types where realistic.
Worked example
| Step | Value |
|---|---|
| Trades per month | 120 |
| Avg notional | $8,000 |
| Taker both sides (0.10%) | $960 / month |
| Maker entry + taker exit (0.07%) | $672 / month |
| Per trade (taker/taker) | $8.00 |
| Per trade (maker/taker) | $5.60 |
Fees vs edge
If expected gross profit is $2,000 a month, taker/taker fees take 48% of it. Halving trade count or using maker entries changes the economics more than most strategy tweaks.

Arithmetic uses standard sizing formulas. Fee rates (0.05% taker, 0.02% maker), slippage and funding values are illustrative; check your venue's schedule. Liquidation figures are simplified approximations; exchanges calculate them with their own maintenance-margin rules (see Bybit's documentation).
