Trading Expectancy in Crypto: When the Common Rule Produces a Misleading Result

Expectancy is an average, and averages hide outliers. One very large win can make a losing approach look profitable.

Short answer

Expectancy = average net R per trade. Illustrative 40 trades total +6R (+0.15R per trade), but one trade made +9R; without it, the other 39 total −3R (≈ −0.08R per trade). Whether that outlier is part of the strategy (it targets rare big moves) or luck changes the conclusion. Report median R, the share of profit from the largest trade, and expectancy with the top trade removed.

Arithmetic uses standard sizing formulas. Fee rates (0.05% taker, 0.02% maker), slippage and funding values are illustrative; check your venue's schedule. Liquidation figures are simplified approximations; exchanges calculate them with their own maintenance-margin rules (see Bybit's documentation).
