Trade-Based CVD vs Candle-Based CVD: Why Results Differ
Two CVD lines on the same market can trend in opposite directions. The method behind each, trades or candles, usually explains why.
Short answer
Trade-based CVD sums each trade's volume signed by its taker side. Candle-based CVD, like TradingView's, signs each lower-timeframe bar's whole volume by whether the bar closed up or down. They agree when sub-bars are one-directional and disagree when buying and selling mix inside sub-bars, which is common in fast, choppy markets. Precision of candle-based CVD also falls on older history as coarser bars are used.
Two methods
Worked example
Illustrative 1-minute sub-bar: 40 BTC of aggressive sells, then 25 BTC of aggressive buys that lift the close 1 tick above the open.
Choosing which CVD to use
If you trade one crypto venue and need to know who aggressed at each moment, prefer trade-based delta on that venue. If you need a quick view across many assets, including non-crypto markets, candle-based CVD on a general platform is convenient and good enough for broad direction.
Whichever you use, label it. A screenshot captioned 'CVD rising' says little; 'trade-based CVD, venue A perp, reset 00:00 UTC, rising' can be checked and compared by someone else.
If two traders disagree about what CVD showed, the first question is which method each used. Often both are right about their own line.
When they diverge most
| Condition | Divergence |
|---|---|
| Trending, one-sided | Small |
| Choppy, two-sided | Large |
| Coarse sub-bars (old history) | Large |
| Fine sub-bars (1s) | Smaller |

Why do two CVDs disagree?
Different methods, intrabar timeframes, venues or resets.
Which is more accurate?
Trade-based measures aggressor side directly; candle-based is an estimate.
Is candle-based CVD useless?
No; it is useful for broad context, especially when trade data is unavailable.
