Supertrend Trend Following Backtest in Crypto: Fees, Slippage and Break-Even Costs

Supertrend flips between long and short based on ATR bands. Always-in-the-market strategies pay costs on every flip, and many flips are whipsaws.

Short answer

A Supertrend strategy (long when price is above the Supertrend line, short when below, flipping on each change) is always in the market, so it pays round-trip costs plus double exposure changes on every flip, and pays or receives funding continuously on perpetuals. Break-even cost per flip is its gross average per trade. Measure flip frequency, whipsaw share and funding paid, use closed-bar flips with next-bar fills, and consider long-only versions if funding and shorts are costly.
