Standard Deviation in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
Standard deviation measures dispersion of recent closes around their mean. On the live bar, a single move far from the mean has outsized effect because deviations are squared.
Short answer
Standard deviation over N closes = √(Σ(close − mean)² ÷ N). The live price is one of the N values and also shifts the mean. Because deviations are squared, a live price far from the mean raises the value much more than one ordinary bar; when price returns, it falls back. Bollinger Bands, z-scores and volatility filters inherit this. In an example with 19 returns alternating ±1%, adding a 4% live return lifts the deviation from ≈ 0.95% to ≈ 1.29%.
Which part of Standard Deviation uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| N−1 closed values | No | Fixed |
| Live value | Yes | Squared deviation |
| Mean | Yes | Shifts by 1/N of move |
Indicators that divide by standard deviation (z-score, %B) become less sensitive as the deviation rises during the move — a self-damping effect.
