Solana Mint and Freeze Authority: What to Check Before a Swap
Every Solana token's mint account records who can mint more and who can freeze accounts. Check both before you swap.
Short answer
On Solana, a token's mint account can have a mint authority (an account allowed to create more tokens) and a freeze authority (an account allowed to freeze token accounts so they cannot transfer), as described in Solana's token documentation. Before swapping, look up the mint on a block explorer: if mint authority is set, supply can grow; if freeze authority is set, your tokens could be frozen. Revoked (none) authorities remove those powers; set authorities need a credible reason.
Two authorities
| Authority | Power | If set | If revoked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mint | Create new tokens | Supply can increase | Supply fixed (except burns) |
| Freeze | Freeze token accounts | Holders can be blocked | No freezing possible |

The EVM equivalent
On EVM chains, equivalent risks live in contract code: owner-only mint functions, blacklist or pause functions, and adjustable transfer taxes. Check whether ownership was renounced and whether the contract is verified on the explorer. The principle is the same: identify who can change supply or block transfers.
When an authority is set for a reason
Some tokens keep authorities deliberately: stablecoins and regulated assets may keep freeze authority for compliance, and some projects keep mint authority for scheduled emissions. In those cases the documentation should explain who holds the authority, under what rules and whether it is controlled by multiple signers.
For a speculative token with no such explanation, a set authority is a strong reason to stop. You are trusting an unknown key holder with the ability to inflate supply or freeze your tokens.
Legitimate reasons
Some regulated or stablecoin-type tokens keep freeze authority for compliance. For a new speculative token, set authorities are a strong caution flag. See How to Find a Solana Token by Mint Address, Not Ticker and A Liquidity Lock Does Not Prove a Token Is Safe: Other Checks.
Check mint and freeze authority on every Solana token, and require a credible reason for any that remain set.
