RSI Trend Continuation Backtest: Bar-Close Signals vs Next-Bar Execution

RSI continuation rules buy strength — e.g. RSI crossing above 60 in an uptrend. Executing on the next bar often means paying up after a strong close.

Short answer

A continuation rule entering when RSI closes above a threshold in an uptrend tends to signal after strong bars. The next bar may open near that strong close, but slippage on momentum entries is often higher, and intrabar signals include bars that faded. Compare intrabar, close and next-open models; use realistic slippage for momentum entries and compute break-even cost per model.

Where the difference comes from

Momentum entries chase price; slippage on market entries after strong bars is typically above average. Intrabar signals add bars that spiked and faded — entries that the closed-bar rule wouldn't take.
