RSI Above 70 in a Crypto Uptrend: Reversal Signal or Strong Momentum?

RSI above 70 is often called overbought. In a strong crypto uptrend it can stay there for days while price keeps rising.

Short answer

RSI above 70 means recent gains have been large relative to recent losses; it measures momentum, not a price ceiling. In strong uptrends RSI can remain above 70 for long periods, and selling every 70 reading fights the trend. Treat it as a reversal clue only with confirmation: structure breaking (a lower high or loss of a key level), momentum failing (RSI falling back below 70 or diverging), and context such as funding or OI showing crowding. Otherwise, read high RSI as strong momentum.

What RSI measures

RSI compares average gains with average losses over a look-back (commonly 14 bars) and scales the ratio to 0–100. A reading of 80 says gains have dominated recently. It says nothing about value or where price must stop.

Worked example: two rallies

Illustrative rally one: BTC rises 18% in ten days, RSI(14) on the daily stays between 72 and 84, pullbacks hold above prior highs, funding stays moderate and OI rises gradually. Selling at the first 70 reading would have missed most of the move. Rally two: price rises 9%, RSI reaches 76, then price makes a marginal new high with RSI at 66 while funding spikes and OI jumps. The next day price loses the last higher low. Only the second case combined high RSI with a structure break and crowding.

The difference between the two was not the RSI number; it was everything around it.

Conclusion

Read RSI above 70 as strong momentum unless structure and positioning confirm a reversal.

Plot RSI with funding and OI on the same chart.
