Rolling Correlation in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
Rolling correlation measures how closely two assets' returns move together over N bars. On the live bar, both assets' returns are unfinished.
Short answer
Rolling correlation uses the last N pairs of returns. On the live bar, both assets' returns are provisional; if they move differently mid-bar (one reacts first), the live correlation dips and may recover by the close. Different data timestamps between the two series (e.g. venues updating at different moments) add noise. Align bars by the same close times, use closed bars, and choose N long enough to be stable.
Which part of Rolling Correlation uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Asset A live return | Yes | Provisional |
| Asset B live return | Yes | Provisional |
| N-pair window | Yes (live pair) | 1/N influence |
| Timestamp alignment | Data | Noise if misaligned |
Lead-lag inside a bar (one asset moving first) shows up as a temporary correlation drop.
