ROC Momentum Backtest in Crypto: Fees, Slippage and Break-Even Costs

Rate of change measures the percentage move over N bars. A momentum rule on it buys strength — and pays when strength fades quickly.

Short answer

ROC(N) = (close ÷ close N bars ago − 1) × 100. A momentum rule buys when ROC crosses above a threshold (or zero) and exits when it falls back. Momentum rules trade less often than reversals and hold longer, so costs matter less per trade, but whipsaws around the threshold add up. Test N and the threshold as a grid, compute break-even cost, and check how much profit comes from the few largest trends.
