Rising Price With Falling Open Interest in Crypto: Units and Time Windows That Change the Result

Price rising while open interest falls is usually read as short covering. In USD units the pattern can disappear, and short windows can invert it.

Short answer

When price rises and OI in coins falls, positions are closing into the rally — commonly shorts buying back. Measured in USD, OI can still rise: a 4% rally with a 3% drop in coin OI leaves USD OI about +0.9%, hiding the covering. Windows matter too: a 24-hour change can net out an earlier liquidation drop and later rebuild. Use coin OI, match the window to the move, and confirm with short liquidations and funding.
