Return Z-Score in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
A return z-score compares the current bar's return with the distribution of recent returns. The live return is incomplete until the close.
Short answer
Return z-score = (current return − mean return) ÷ standard deviation of returns over N. Unlike a price z-score, it measures how unusual this bar's move is. On the live bar, the return grows or shrinks with price, so an 'extreme bar' flag (e.g. |z| > 3) can appear and disappear. Also, if the live return is included in the deviation, it dampens itself; most tools use the previous N returns for the deviation. Check which, and use closed bars.
Which part of Return Z-Score uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Live return | Yes | Moves with price |
| Mean / std of returns | Depends | Past N or including live |
| |z| threshold | Yes | Flags flicker |
Excluding the live bar from the deviation keeps the yardstick fixed during the bar, which makes the live z easier to interpret.
