Renko Trend Signal Backtest in Crypto: Fees, Slippage and Break-Even Costs
Renko bricks print only when price moves a fixed amount, hiding time and noise. Their brick prices are synthetic, so fills must come from real data.
Short answer
A Renko trend rule buys after N bricks in one direction and exits on a reversal brick. Bricks smooth out noise, but brick open/close prices are constructed, and reversals often require a two-brick move, delaying exits. Simulate fills on real trades or time-based bars, account for gaps (price can jump past several bricks), choose brick size relative to ATR, and compute break-even cost.
Break-even cost
| Item | Value (illustrative) |
|---|---|
| Trades | 80 |
| Gross avg per trade | +0.85% |
| Fees (2 × 0.05%) | −0.10% |
| Slippage (2 × 0.05%) | −0.10% |
| Net avg per trade | +0.65% |
| Break-even round-trip cost | 0.85% |
Brick size
| Brick size | Signals | Net avg (real fills, illustrative) |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 × ATR | 220 | +0.12% |
| 1 × ATR | 80 | +0.44% |
| 2 × ATR | 30 | +0.61% (small sample) |
