R-Multiple Journal Reviews in Crypto: When the Common Rule Produces a Misleading Result
R-multiples assume a defined initial risk. If stops were moved, missing or set after entry, the R values in a review are wrong.
Short answer
R = net result ÷ initial planned risk. The rule misleads when the initial stop wasn't recorded before entry (R gets inferred later), when the stop was widened (a 'loss of −1R' was really −1.8R of the original plan), or when fees weren't included in R. Reviews built on those values understate risk. Record the initial stop and size before entry, and keep it fixed in R calculations even if the live stop changes.
Worked example
| Step | Value |
|---|---|
| Initial stop recorded before entry | Valid R |
| Stop inferred after trade | Biased R |
| Stop widened mid-trade | Loss > −1R hidden |
| Fees excluded | R overstated |
| Fix | Freeze initial R |
Recording rules
| Field | When |
|---|---|
| Initial stop | Before entry |
| Size | Before entry |
| Planned R ($) | Before entry |
| Stop changes | Logged, not used to rescale R |

Arithmetic uses standard sizing formulas. Fee rates (0.05% taker, 0.02% maker), slippage and funding values are illustrative; check your venue's schedule. Liquidation figures are simplified approximations; exchanges calculate them with their own maintenance-margin rules (see Bybit's documentation).
