Price Momentum Oscillator in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
The Price Momentum Oscillator double-smooths the one-bar rate of change. Its smoothing slows it, but the live bar's return still feeds both layers.
Short answer
The Price Momentum Oscillator (as popularised by DecisionPoint) takes the one-bar percentage change, smooths it with a custom exponential average (commonly 35 periods), multiplies by 10, smooths again (commonly 20 periods), and adds a signal line. On the live bar, the current return enters the first smoothing and flows into the second, so PMO moves intrabar — less than raw ROC, more than you might expect from its slow look. Crosses with its signal should use closed bars.
Which part of PMO uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| 1-bar ROC | Yes | Live return |
| First smoothing (35) | Yes | Small weight |
| Second smoothing (20) | Yes | Smaller still |
| Signal line | Yes | Crosses flip |
