Positive Delta During a Selloff in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
Positive delta during a selloff says aggressive buyers were active. How price responds to that aggression tells you whether it mattered.
Short answer
During a selloff, positive delta means aggressive buyers outweighed aggressive sellers. Price response adds the missing information: if price kept falling despite that aggression, passive sellers were absorbing it, and the selloff has strong supply; if price stalled or reversed, the aggression may be finding traction. Measure response as price change per unit of delta over the same bars, compare with the market's normal ratio, and confirm with the order book.
Measuring price response
| Window | Delta | Price change | Response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bars 1–3 | +400 | −0.6% | Moving against buyers |
| Bars 4–6 | +450 | 0.0% | Stall |
| Bars 7–9 | +300 | +0.4% | Traction for buyers |
Interpreting
Rule out data issues first (venue, method, gaps, reset): see Positive Delta With Falling Price: Absorption or Incomplete Data?.
Example: measuring response
Illustrative: over 30 minutes of a sell-off, delta is +900 BTC while price falls 0.8%. In the next 30 minutes, delta is +600 BTC and price is flat. The market's normal response for that much buying is about +0.3%. The first half shows strong passive selling; the second shows selling pressure easing. Only the second half supports looking for a turn, and only with structure confirming.
