Order-Flow Exhaustion Candidates in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
Exhaustion is a move that ends with shrinking aggression at the extreme. Price response shows whether the move actually stopped.
Short answer
An order-flow exhaustion candidate shows aggressive volume declining as price reaches a new extreme — fewer and smaller prints at the edge. If price then reverses within a defined window, the reading helped; if price resumes after a pause, it was only a pause. Compare with absorption (heavy volume, no progress): exhaustion is light volume at the edge. Measure across many extremes.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| Reverses | Exhaustion confirmed |
| Pauses then continues | False exhaustion |
| Ranges | Inconclusive |
| Retests and fails | Strengthens it |
Measuring the response
Define 'declining aggression' numerically (e.g. each of the last three rows below half the prior row's ask volume). Record the response window and outcome for every case.
Example
Illustrative: ask volume falls from 34 to 2 BTC over the final four rows of a high at 62,100. Price reverses 1.4% over 15 bars. Across many cases, compare reversal rate with random extremes.
