Order Flow at Previous-Day Lows in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
At the previous day's low, sell stops and breakdown orders meet passive bids. Flow and the response afterwards show who won.
Short answer
When price reaches the previous day's low, check aggressive selling (negative delta), whether bids absorb it or are pulled, long liquidations if on perps, and OI change. Then measure response: acceptance below with OI rising suggests new shorts; a spike below that reverses with heavy selling absorbed suggests a stop run. Liquidation bursts at PDL often exaggerate the wick.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| Accepted below, OI up | New shorts |
| Spike below, reclaim | Stop run absorbed |
| Liquidations spike | Forced selling |
| Bids pulled | Weak support |
Measuring the response
Record delta, liquidations and OI during the test, and price change over fixed windows afterwards. Separate tests where liquidations dominated.
Example
Illustrative: −340 BTC delta and 85 BTC of long liquidations at the PDL, yet price was 45 bps higher an hour later — selling absorbed. Count the tests where it wasn't.
