Order Flow Around CPI Releases in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
Macro releases such as US CPI can move crypto sharply in seconds. Order flow shows how liquidity behaves before and how aggression arrives after.
Short answer
Before a scheduled release like CPI, spreads often widen and resting depth thins as liquidity providers step back. At the release, aggressive flow arrives in one direction, liquidations may follow on perps, and depth returns over minutes. Measure spread, depth within a band, delta and liquidations in fixed windows before and after; then measure whether the first move holds over 30–60 minutes. Store times in UTC.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| Depth thins before | Liquidity stepping back |
| Spread widens | Caution |
| First move holds | Information absorbed |
| First move reverses | Overreaction / liquidations |
Measuring the response
Record depth, spread, delta, liquidations and price at fixed offsets from the release time; compare first-minute direction with 45-minute direction across releases.
Example
Illustrative: depth within ±0.5% fell 60% in the five minutes before release; the first move of +1.1% gave back half within 45 minutes as liquidations faded.
