Order Flow After a Trading Halt in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
When a venue halts or a market pauses, orders build up. The first minutes after trading resumes show how much imbalance accumulated.
Short answer
After a trading halt or venue outage, pending orders and changed prices elsewhere create an imbalance at resumption: price may gap toward other venues' prices, spreads are wide, and aggressive flow arrives in bursts. Measure the gap between the resuming venue and others, delta in the first minutes, and how quickly spreads and depth normalise. Data around halts often has gaps; mark them.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| Gap to other venues closes fast | Arbitrage at work |
| Large one-sided delta | Accumulated orders |
| Spread normalises slowly | Liquidity cautious |
| Data gaps | Exclude from studies |
Measuring the response
Record halt start/end, other venues' prices during the halt, delta and spread after resumption, and time to normalise. Flag the halt window in datasets.
Example
Illustrative: a 20-minute halt on venue A ended with a 1.3% gap to align with other venues; spreads took five minutes to normalise.
