Order Flow After a Range Breakout in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
After price breaks out of a range, follow-through depends on new participation. Order flow in the first bars after the break shows whether it's there.
Short answer
In the bars after a range breakout, check whether aggressive flow continues in the breakout direction, whether OI rises (new positions) or falls (covering), whether spot participates, and whether the old range edge holds on any pullback. Strong follow-through: continued delta, rising OI, spot joining. Weak: delta fades, OI falls, price drifts back toward the range.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| Delta continues, OI up | New participation |
| Delta fades, OI down | Covering only |
| Spot joins | Broader demand |
| Back inside range | Failed breakout |
Measuring the response
Record delta (spot and perp), OI and price over fixed windows after the breakout bar closes; classify breakouts by these and compare later outcomes.
Example
Illustrative: after a breakout, perp and spot delta stayed positive and OI rose 3.2% in the first hour. Breakouts with this profile can be compared with those where OI fell.
