Order-Book Imbalance in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading

Order-book imbalance compares resting bids and asks near the price. It's visible and changeable; price response decides whether it meant anything.

Short answer

Order-book imbalance = (bid size − ask size) ÷ (bid size + ask size) within a band around mid. A strongly positive reading shows more resting bids, but resting orders can be pulled, so imbalance alone isn't directional. Test it: record imbalance, then price change over fixed horizons, across many readings. If the relationship is weak or reverses, the book is being used to display rather than to trade.

Measuring the response

Fix the band (e.g. ±0.1% of mid), sample imbalance at regular intervals, and compare with price change over 10 seconds, 1 minute and 5 minutes.

Example

Illustrative: imbalance of +0.5 is followed by price falling 0.2% within a minute as 100 BTC of bids disappears. Log it with cases where bids held.
