Options Payoff at Expiry in Crypto: How to Read the Data With Price Context
An option's payoff at expiry is simple arithmetic. Drawing it against price shows break-even and the range where the position makes or loses money.
Short answer
At expiry, a long call pays max(0, settlement − strike) minus the premium paid; a long put pays max(0, strike − settlement) minus premium. Example: a 60,000 BTC call bought for $1,800 breaks even at $61,800; at $65,000 settlement it makes $3,200; at or below $60,000 it loses $1,800. Settlement uses the venue's delivery price (Deribit reports an estimated delivery price), not the last trade. Fees reduce every outcome.
Worked payoff
| Settlement | Intrinsic | Net (after $1,800 premium) |
|---|---|---|
| $58,000 | $0 | −$1,800 |
| $60,000 | $0 | −$1,800 |
| $61,800 | $1,800 | $0 |
| $65,000 | $5,000 | +$3,200 |
