Open-Interest Spikes Without Volume in Crypto: How to Read the Data With Price Context

Open interest jumps but traded volume barely moves. That combination deserves a data check before a market interpretation.

Short answer

An open-interest spike without a matching volume increase can come from data artefacts (a delayed OI update catching up, a unit or contract change, a venue added to an aggregate), from large block or off-book transfers recorded differently, or from positions opened gradually but reported in a single update. Binance notes its OI statistics omit periods with no trades rather than backfilling. Check the update frequency, units and venue list first; only then read the spike as positioning, with price context.

Price context

If the spike survives data checks and funding or basis reacts, positioning changed. If price is flat and funding unchanged, the spike may reflect hedged positions (e.g. basis trades) that carry little directional information.
