Open Interest in USD vs Coins in Crypto: How to Read the Data With Price Context

OI in USD includes price; OI in coins doesn't. Read them together and the difference tells you how much of an OI change was price.

Short answer

Open interest in USD = OI in coins × price, so the percentage change in USD OI ≈ change in coin OI + change in price. Binance's OI statistics report both sumOpenInterest (quantity) and sumOpenInterestValue (value). In price context, decompose any USD OI move: if USD OI rose 12% while price rose 10%, coin OI rose about 2%, so most of the 'growth' was price. Use the coin series for positioning and USD for comparing leverage across assets.

Price context

On the sell-off day, USD OI fell, which could be read as deleveraging, but coin OI rose 4%: new positions (likely shorts) opened into the drop. Reading only USD OI reverses the conclusion.
