Open Interest in Contracts vs Coins in Crypto: Units and Time Windows That Change the Result

Open interest reported in contracts can mean very different coin amounts depending on the contract specification. Converting first avoids false comparisons.

Short answer

Contract specifications vary: a linear BTCUSDT contract may equal 1 BTC; multiplier contracts (e.g. 1000-unit tokens) represent many coins; inverse contracts often have a fixed USD value per contract, so their coin equivalent changes with price. One million $100 inverse contracts equal ≈ 1,667 BTC at $60,000 but ≈ 1,515 BTC at $66,000 — a 9% 'drop' in coin OI with no positions closed. Convert to coins using the spec and the price at each timestamp.
