OBV in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
On-Balance Volume adds or subtracts a bar's whole volume depending on whether it closes up or down. On a live bar, that sign can flip with every tick around the prior close.
Short answer
OBV = previous OBV + volume if close > prior close, − volume if close < prior close, unchanged if equal. On the live bar the 'close' is the current price, so OBV's step for that bar is provisional twice over: the volume keeps growing, and the sign depends on whether price is above or below the prior close right now. If price hovers near the prior close, OBV can jump by the bar's full volume in either direction several times before the close. Use closed-bar OBV for any rule.
Which part of OBV uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Prior OBV | No | Fixed |
| Current bar volume | Yes | Grows through the bar |
| Sign (close vs prior close) | Yes | Can flip repeatedly |
| OBV value | Yes | Jumps by ± full volume |
OBV has no smoothing to damp the flip. A bar with 5,000 BTC of volume that is +1 tick above the prior close adds 5,000; one tick lower, it subtracts 5,000 — a 10,000 swing from a one-tick move.
