Multi-Timeframe Trend Filter Backtest in Crypto: Fees, Slippage and Break-Even Costs
Requiring a higher-timeframe trend to agree with a lower-timeframe signal is common. The backtest trap is using the higher timeframe's unfinished bar.
Short answer
A multi-timeframe trend filter allows, for example, 15-minute long signals only when the 4-hour close is above its 50-EMA. In a backtest, the 4-hour value at each 15-minute bar must be the last completed 4-hour bar, not the one that closes later; otherwise the filter knows the future. Compare filtered and unfiltered results, check trade counts and compute break-even cost.
Break-even cost
| Item | Value (illustrative) |
|---|---|
| Trades | 140 |
| Gross avg per trade | +0.43% |
| Fees (2 × 0.05%) | −0.10% |
| Slippage (2 × 0.03%) | −0.06% |
| Net avg per trade | +0.27% |
| Break-even round-trip cost | 0.43% |
Higher-timeframe timing
| HTF value used | Net avg (illustrative) | Valid? |
|---|---|---|
| Last completed 4H bar | +0.29% | Yes |
| Current (unfinished) 4H bar | +0.47% | No — look-ahead |
| No filter | +0.08% | Yes |
