MFI in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
Money Flow Index weights typical price by volume. During a live bar, both the price and the accumulated volume are still changing.
Short answer
MFI uses typical price × volume (raw money flow), classifies each bar's flow as positive or negative by whether typical price rose or fell versus the previous bar, and computes 100 − 100 ÷ (1 + positive flow ÷ negative flow) over N bars. In a live bar, volume keeps accumulating and the typical price changes; if the typical price crosses the previous bar's, the whole bar's flow switches from positive to negative. MFI can therefore jump intrabar. Use closed-bar values, and compare MFI only on the venue whose volume you trade.
Which part of MFI uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Typical price (H+L+C)/3 | Yes | Moves with price |
| Volume | Yes, accumulating | Grows through bar |
| Flow sign (vs previous TP) | Yes | Can flip whole bar |
| MFI | Yes | Can jump |
The sign flip is MFI's distinctive intrabar risk: a bar's entire money flow moves from the positive to the negative side when typical price dips below the prior bar's, then back if it recovers.
