MFI in Crypto: Warm-Up Bars and Short-History Errors
Money Flow Index sums positive and negative money flow over N bars. It's exact once the window fills, but launch volume can dominate early readings.
Short answer
MFI(14) needs 15 bars (14 changes in typical price) and is window-based: sums of positive and negative money flow over the window, no recursion. On short histories, launch-day volume can dominate the window, so one heavy bar decides MFI for two weeks of hourly bars or 14 daily bars. Mark the first valid bar and check whether one bar's volume is a large share of the window before trusting overbought or oversold readings.
How much history MFI needs
| Component | Bars needed | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Typical price change | 2 | Per bar |
| Money flow sums (14) | 15 | Window |
| MFI | 15 | Window |
Window-based: once the window is full, the value is exact and doesn't depend on earlier history.
Short-history errors
- Launch volume dominating
- Values before window fills
- Comparing coins of different age
- Volume gaps
