Mass Index in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
The Mass Index tracks range expansion with a ratio of smoothed high-low ranges. A wide live bar can push it toward its 'reversal bulge' threshold intrabar.
Short answer
Mass Index = sum over 25 bars of EMA(9) of (high − low) ÷ EMA(9) of that EMA. On the live bar, the range only widens, raising the single-smoothed EMA faster than the double-smoothed one, so the ratio and the 25-bar sum rise. The classic 'bulge' (above 27, then below 26.5) can be reached intrabar on a wide bar and not hold at the close. Use closed values.
Which part of Mass Index uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Live range (H − L) | Yes | Only widens |
| EMA(9) of range | Yes | Rises faster |
| EMA of EMA | Yes | Rises slower |
| 25-bar sum | Yes | Ratio of live bar included |
The ratio responds to change in range, not its level, so a sudden expansion after quiet bars moves it most.
