MACD in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
MACD's line, signal line and histogram all include the current price. The histogram, being a difference of differences, swings the most inside a bar.
Short answer
MACD = EMA(12) − EMA(26) of closes; the signal line is EMA(9) of MACD; the histogram is MACD − signal. All three use the current bar's price as its close until the bar ends, so they move intrabar. The histogram moves most because it amplifies small changes in MACD relative to its slower signal line. Histogram colour changes or zero crosses seen mid-bar can reverse by the close. Use closed-bar values for histogram-based rules. Line-crossover behaviour is covered separately.
Which part of MACD uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| EMA(12), EMA(26) | Yes | Shift with live price |
| MACD line | Yes | Moves moderately |
| Signal EMA(9) | Yes | Moves less (smoothed) |
| Histogram | Yes | Moves most |
Because the signal line is a smoothed version of MACD, any intrabar change in MACD shows up almost fully in the histogram, making histogram-based signals the least stable intrabar.

Why does the MACD histogram change colour mid-bar?
It uses the live price; small MACD changes are amplified.
Which MACD part is most stable?
The signal line.
Should histogram signals use closed bars?
