Losing-Streak Planning in Crypto: When the Common Rule Produces a Misleading Result

Losing-streak probabilities usually assume trades are independent. In real markets, losses cluster in bad regimes, so long streaks are more likely.

Short answer

Standard streak maths (e.g. ≈ 49% chance of 8+ losses in 100 trades at a 40% win rate) assumes each trade is independent. When a strategy suits some regimes and not others, losses cluster: during a bad regime the effective win rate might be 25%, where 8+ losses in a row become far more likely. Plan risk for clustered streaks — test streak lengths on your own history, not only the formula.

Why do losses cluster?

Regimes change a strategy's win rate.

How should I plan?

Use observed streaks and a margin.

Arithmetic uses standard sizing formulas. Fee rates (0.05% taker, 0.02% maker), slippage and funding values are illustrative; check your venue's schedule. Liquidation figures are simplified approximations; exchanges calculate them with their own maintenance-margin rules (see Bybit's documentation).
