Long-Short Account Ratio vs Position Ratio: What Each Measures

A long-short account ratio counts accounts. A position ratio weighs positions by size. They can point in opposite directions.

Short answer

Binance's top-trader long/short account ratio measures the share of net-long versus net-short accounts among the top 20% of users by margin balance, counting each account once. The position ratio weighs by position size, so a few large accounts can dominate it. The global long/short account ratio covers all traders. If many small accounts are long but large accounts hold more short exposure, the account ratio looks bullish while the position ratio looks bearish. Binance keeps these ratios for the latest 30 days.

Example of disagreement

Illustrative: among top traders, 70% of accounts are net long (account ratio 2.33), but the 30% that are short hold larger positions, so long exposure is only 45% of total (position ratio 0.82).

Ratios are one venue's positioning snapshot. Original ChartsPod editorial graphic.

Ratios describe one exchange's users. Other venues may differ. Treat extreme readings as context for crowding, not as signals on their own.

Example: ratio extremes over time

Illustrative: over two weeks, the global account ratio climbs from 1.2 to 2.8 as price rises, meaning many small accounts lean long. The top-trader position ratio falls from 1.1 to 0.9. Large capital is reducing long exposure into the rally while the crowd adds. That divergence is a useful context note; it does not tell you when price will turn.

Because Binance keeps these ratios for 30 days, store your own history if you want longer comparisons.

Conclusion

Use the account ratio for crowd lean and the position ratio for where capital sits, and read them together.
