Large-Trade Clusters in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading

Large trades that cluster at a price look significant. Whether they mattered shows in what price did next.

Short answer

A large-trade cluster is several trades above a size threshold within a narrow price and time window. They may be one participant splitting an order, several reacting to the same level, or liquidations. Price response tests them: price moving in the aggressor's direction suggests the flow was informed or forceful; price moving against suggests it was absorbed or forced. Check liquidation feeds and OI to separate voluntary and forced trades.

Measuring the response

Set the size threshold relative to the market's typical trade, the cluster window, and the response window. Tag each cluster as aggressive buy or sell and check liquidations and OI.

Example

Illustrative: six buy trades above 20 BTC within 30 seconds at 60,800; OI rises; price follows +0.9% in 30 minutes. A similar cluster with OI falling and a liquidation feed spike would be read differently.
