Ichimoku Trend Following Backtest in Crypto: Fees, Slippage and Break-Even Costs
Ichimoku combines several lines, so 'an Ichimoku signal' can mean many rules. Also, its leading span is plotted ahead of price, which trips backtests.
Short answer
An Ichimoku trend rule might buy when price closes above the cloud with Tenkan above Kijun, and exit on a close back inside the cloud. Two backtest traps: the cloud (Senkou spans) is plotted 26 bars ahead, so use the value computed from data available at each bar, not the shifted plot; and the Chikou span is plotted 26 bars back, so using it as a 'current' condition looks into the future. Define every condition explicitly, then compute break-even cost.
Break-even cost
| Item | Value (illustrative) |
|---|---|
| Trades | 60 |
| Gross avg per trade | +1.35% |
| Fees (2 × 0.05%) | −0.10% |
| Slippage (2 × 0.05%) | −0.10% |
| Net avg per trade | +1.15% |
| Break-even round-trip cost | 1.35% |
Look-ahead traps
| Component | Plotted | Backtest rule |
|---|---|---|
| Tenkan / Kijun | Current bar | Use as is |
| Senkou A / B (cloud) | 26 bars ahead | Use value available now |
| Chikou | 26 bars back | Compare close with close 26 bars ago, not a future value |
