Historical Volatility in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
Historical volatility annualises the standard deviation of recent returns. The live bar's return is one of those returns until the bar closes.
Short answer
Historical volatility (HV) = standard deviation of N log returns × √(periods per year). For daily crypto bars, periods per year is commonly 365, so a 3% daily standard deviation annualises to ≈ 57%. On the live bar, the current return enters the calculation; one large intrabar move can raise HV noticeably, and it falls back if price returns. Compare HV with implied volatility only on closed-bar values.
Which part of Historical Volatility uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| N−1 closed returns | No | Fixed |
| Live return | Yes | Squared in variance |
| Annualisation | No | √365 for daily |
Squared deviations mean one outlier dominates: a single 4% live return among ±1% returns raises a 20-bar deviation from ≈ 0.95% to ≈ 1.29%.
