GeckoTerminal OHLCV Charts: Base Token vs Quote Token Explained
A pool has two tokens. Candles can be built for either, and in either's terms. Choosing wrongly turns the quote asset's moves into fake token moves.
Short answer
In a pool, the base token is the asset being priced and the quote token is the unit it is priced in. CoinGecko's onchain OHLCV documentation lets candles be built for the base or quote side of a pool. If a token trades against SOL or WETH, its chart in quote terms includes every SOL or WETH move; use a USD view or a stable-quoted pool to isolate the token's own movement. Some OHLCV fields can be null when no swaps occurred.
Base, quote and what the chart shows
Worked arithmetic
Illustrative: token at 0.0010 SOL with SOL at $150 = $0.15. SOL rises to $165 (+10%) while the token stays at $0.15. The token now costs 0.000909 SOL: the SOL-quoted chart shows −9.1% although nothing happened to the token in dollar terms.
Getting a clean USD view
If the token has a pool against a stablecoin such as USDC with reasonable liquidity, chart that pool for USD analysis. Its price is already in dollars, without conversion timing issues.
If the only meaningful pool is against SOL or WETH, use the tool's USD conversion but be aware it multiplies two prices taken at slightly different times. For precise work, chart the quote asset's USD price alongside and decompose moves (see the token-vs-SOL guide).
When sharing charts, label the unit in the title. "Token/SOL, pool address …" prevents someone reading a SOL-terms drop as a dollar loss.
Null fields and gaps
CoinGecko notes some OHLCV fields can be null. In a pool, an interval without swaps has no trades to build a candle from. Treat that as "no trades", not "price unchanged". More in Why a DEX Token Chart Has Gaps: No Trades vs Missing Data.
For tokens also on centralised exchanges, compare with USDT-quoted exchange candles.

Open the ChartsPod terminalQuestions readers ask
What is the quote token?
The asset a pool's price is expressed in, e.g. SOL in a token/SOL pool.
Why did my token chart fall when SOL rose?
The chart was in SOL terms; the token became cheaper in SOL.
Why are some candles missing?
No swaps occurred; some OHLCV fields can be null.
Sources and methodology
GeckoTerminal behaviour is described through CoinGecko's official onchain API documentation, which exposes the same pool data, as read on 17 October 2026. Interface labels may differ from API field names. Examples use illustrative numbers.
- CoinGecko API: Onchain OHLCV WebSocket — pool candles, base/quote selection, nullable fields.
- CoinGecko API: Top pools by token address — multiple pools per token.
