Funding Flips Near Settlement: Units and Time Windows That Change the Result
A predicted funding rate can flip sign in the last minutes before settlement. What you saw an hour earlier may not be what's paid.
Short answer
Because predicted funding tracks the premium through the interval, a sharp move near settlement can flip it from positive to negative (or back). Positions held at the settlement time pay or receive the settled value, not the earlier prediction. When analysing funding around settlement, use the settled rate, note how far predicted values moved in the final period, and avoid strategies that depend on a prediction made long before settlement.
Flip example
| Time to settlement | Predicted rate |
|---|---|
| −60 min | +0.008% |
| −20 min | +0.002% |
| −5 min | −0.004% |
| Settled | −0.005% |
