Force Index in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
Force Index multiplies price change by volume. On the live bar, both factors move — and the product can swing widely as a result.
Short answer
Force Index (1) = (close − prior close) × volume, usually smoothed with an EMA (e.g. 13). On the live bar, the price change can flip sign and the volume keeps growing, so the raw value can swing from large positive to large negative. The EMA damps it by α = 2/(N+1), but zero crosses of a short Force Index still occur intrabar. Use closed bars for signals.
Which part of Force Index uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Price change vs prior close | Yes | Can flip sign |
| Volume | Yes | Grows |
| Raw force | Yes | Product amplifies |
| EMA smoothing | Yes | α weight |
Because volume keeps rising, late-bar price moves carry more weight in the product than early ones.
