Footprint Value-Area Expansion in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
When a candle's value area widens, trading spread across more prices. Whether it widened in the direction of the move tells you about acceptance.
Short answer
Value-area expansion means the price range holding most of a candle's (or session's) volume is getting wider. Expansion in the direction of the move, with POC following, suggests the market is accepting new prices; expansion in both directions suggests volatility without direction; expansion against the move suggests the move is being rejected. Compare value-area high and low changes with price and POC over the same candles.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| Expands with the move, POC follows | Acceptance |
| Expands both ways | Volatile balance |
| Expands against the move | Rejection |
| Narrows | Compression |
Measuring the response
For each candle or session, record VAH, VAL and POC. Compute changes versus the previous one and classify the expansion. Compare with the next period's price direction to build a base rate.
Example
Illustrative: during a breakout session, VAH rises 0.8% and VAL rises 0.3% while POC rises 0.6%: directional expansion with acceptance. The next session holds above the prior VAH.
