Footprint Diagonal Imbalances in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading

A diagonal imbalance shows aggressors lifting offers or hitting bids across the spread. Price response separates real pressure from a passing burst.

Short answer

A diagonal buy imbalance means ask volume at a price greatly exceeded bid volume one row lower: buyers were lifting offers aggressively. Price response decides significance: follow-through (the next rows and bars continue higher) suggests sustained pressure; immediate stall at the imbalance row suggests a burst met by passive sellers. Imbalances at the extreme of a bar with no follow-through often mark exhaustion rather than strength. Judge them by the next few bars.

Measuring the response

For each diagonal imbalance, note its location within the bar (top, middle, bottom) and measure price change over the next 2–3 bars. Separate results by location.

Example

Illustrative: a diagonal buy imbalance at the very top of a 5-minute bar (ask 45 vs bid 8 one row below) is followed by a lower close and two red bars. The aggressive buying marked the high.
