Footprint and Candle-Delta Disagreement in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
A footprint's row deltas should sum to the candle's delta. When they don't, data or settings differ — and price-response studies built on either inherit the problem.
Short answer
Footprint delta per row and the candle's total delta come from the same trades and should match. Mismatches come from different data sources (trade-based vs intrabar estimate), volume filters applied to one view only, different session or candle boundaries, or data gaps. Resolve the mismatch before measuring how price responds to delta.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| Sum matches | Consistent data |
| Mismatch, filter applied | Settings issue |
| Mismatch, estimate vs trades | Method difference |
| Mismatch, gap | Data issue |
Measuring the response
For a sample of candles, sum row deltas, compare with candle delta from each source, and log mismatches by cause.
Example
Illustrative: an intrabar-estimated candle delta showed +22 BTC while trade-based rows summed to −15 BTC; the estimate classified a mixed bar as buying.
