Fixed-Dollar Risk per Trade in Crypto: When the Common Rule Produces a Misleading Result
Risking a fixed $500 per trade is simple. As the account changes, that fixed amount quietly becomes a different percentage of what you have.
Short answer
Fixed-dollar risk keeps the dollar loss per trade constant. It misleads when the account changes: $500 is 1% of $50,000 but ≈ 1.67% of $30,000 after a drawdown, so risk rises exactly when the account is weakest; after growth, it shrinks. Review the fixed amount on a schedule against current equity, and decide in advance when to step it down. Fees and slippage still add to each loss.
Worked example
| Step | Value |
|---|---|
| Risk per trade | $500 |
| At $50,000 | 1.0% |
| At $40,000 | 1.25% |
| At $30,000 | ≈ 1.67% |
| At $70,000 | ≈ 0.71% |
Fixes
| Approach | Effect |
|---|---|
| Review monthly vs equity | Keeps percentage near target |
| Step-down rule in drawdown | Limits risk when weakest |
| Switch to percent | Automatic scaling |

Arithmetic uses standard sizing formulas. Fee rates (0.05% taker, 0.02% maker), slippage and funding values are illustrative; check your venue's schedule. Liquidation figures are simplified approximations; exchanges calculate them with their own maintenance-margin rules (see Bybit's documentation).
