EMA in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
An exponential moving average weights the newest close most. That makes the live-bar EMA respond faster than an SMA — and change more before the close.
Short answer
EMA = α × price + (1 − α) × previous EMA, with α = 2 ÷ (N + 1). For a 20-EMA, α ≈ 0.095, so about 9.5% of the live price enters the value. Inside the live bar the EMA moves by α times the price change: a $500 intrabar swing moves a 20-EMA by about $48. Price crossing the EMA intrabar is the usual source of vanishing crossover signals. Compare live crosses with closed-bar crosses before trusting them.
Which part of EMA uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Previous EMA | No | Fixed |
| α × live price | Yes | Moves α × price change |
| Price vs EMA | Yes | Crosses can vanish |
The α weight is why shorter EMAs move more intrabar: α is 0.33 for a 5-EMA, 0.095 for a 20-EMA and about 0.01 for a 200-EMA.
