Crypto Volume in Base vs Quote Currency: Normalize Before Ranking
Ranking coins by base volume favours cheap tokens; ranking by quote volume favours expensive ones less. Pick one unit and convert before ranking.
Short answer
Base volume counts units of the asset traded (e.g. BTC); quote volume counts value in the quote currency (e.g. USDT). Base volumes are not comparable across assets: 1 billion units of a $0.0001 token is $100,000. To rank markets by activity, use quote volume in a common currency (USD or USDT), and if quotes differ (USDT, USDC, BTC), convert at the same timestamp. Binance klines include both base and quote asset volume.
The units
| Market | Base volume | Price | Quote volume |
|---|---|---|---|
| BTC/USDT | 12,000 BTC | $60,000 | $720M |
| TOKEN/USDT | 5,000,000,000 | $0.0001 | $0.5M |

Markets quoted in BTC or ETH need conversion to USD at the same timestamp. Stablecoin quotes (USDT, USDC) are close to $1 but not identical; for precise ranking use their own USD rates.
Mistakes
Comparing a site showing base volume with one showing quote volume; mixing rolling 24h with calendar-day volume; summing volumes across venues with different reporting. See ChartsPod ETHUSDT Charts: Pair Price, Quote Volume and Market Type and TradingView Crypto Screener Filters: Spot, Perpetual and Quote Currency.
Example: a misleading leaderboard
Illustrative: a 'most traded tokens' list ranked by base volume shows three meme tokens with trillions of units traded at the top. Re-ranked by USD quote volume, they fall to positions 40–60, and BTC, ETH and SOL lead. The first list measured unit counts; the second measured economic activity.
Conclusion
Rank markets by quote volume in one currency, converted at the same time and over the same window.
