Correlated Altcoin Positions: Why Five Trades Can Be One Bet

Five altcoin longs at 1% risk each can behave like one 5% bet on 'crypto up'. Correlation turns separate trades into concentrated risk.

Short answer

Altcoins are highly correlated with each other and with BTC, especially in sell-offs. Five long positions risking 1% each can lose close to 5% together if the market falls, because their stops tend to hit simultaneously. Measure correlation of returns over a recent window, group highly correlated positions, and cap total risk per group (for example 2% for all majors-linked longs). Treat a portfolio of correlated trades as one position when sizing.

Why it happens

When BTC drops sharply, most altcoins follow, often more. Correlations rise in stress, exactly when stops are tested.

Example: a correlated drawdown

Illustrative: a trader holds longs in ETH, SOL, AVAX, LINK and DOGE, each risking 1%. BTC drops 6% in an hour; all five stops trigger within 20 minutes. Total loss 4.8% including slippage, versus the 1% per-trade risk the trader believed they were taking. A group cap of 2% would have limited the loss to about 2%.

Conclusion

Group correlated positions and cap their combined risk as if they were one trade.

Typically highly, with each other and BTC, especially in sell-offs.

How do I limit correlated risk?

Cap total risk per group of highly correlated positions.

Does diversification across altcoins help?

Less than expected; correlation rises in stress.
