ChartsPod Parameter Search: Settings to Check Before Your First Analysis
Searching many parameter combinations finds the best one in the past. It also finds luck. The settings of the search decide how much.
Short answer
A parameter search runs a strategy over a grid of settings. ChartsPod lists backtesting; check whether and how parameter grids are supported. Whatever the tool, record how many combinations were tested, look for stable regions rather than single peaks, hold out data the search never saw, and include costs in every run. The more combinations, the more the best result reflects chance.
What it shows
ChartsPod's public pages do not name this view explicitly; check whether it is offered and use the closest equivalent if not.
| Element | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Grid | Parameters and ranges |
| Combinations | Count tested |
| Objective | Net return, drawdown… |
| Holdout | Unseen period |
Settings to check first
Common first-session mistakes:
- Picking a lone peak
- Searching on all data
- Not counting combinations
Worked example
Illustrative: length 16 returns +31% while neighbours return +4% to +22%. A stable region would show similar results across neighbours; this peak is likely luck.
